Blogspot SEO tips for bloggers

Blogger SEO

We already had a lot of gossip on Creating a free Blogspot blog. In Blogspot, it is not so easy to optimize your blog for search engine visibility. In case you are using WordPress, there are thousands of plugins and tools that you can use. While on Blogspot, you are given limited features and functionality for setting up SEO.
You need to depend upon your theme layout, on-page SEO, writing quality and SEO settings. However, you don’t need to be disappointed because this particular blog is on blogger platform with a custom domain and I am doing well with SEO.
In this article, I will be guiding you through these techniques that you can use to set up Blogspot SEO for bloggers. I have divided Blogspot SEO into 3 series because SEO can’t be covered in a single article. Go through the following links to read them one by one.
🔸 On-page SEO for Blogspot
🔸Off-page SEO for Blogspot
If you need help with starting a free blog on Blogspot, then please refer to this article. Before we begin, let’s first check whether your site is listed on the Search engine or not. For that, on Google search box, type in  Site””.
If the results correspond to your blog, then you are all done. No need to go further. But, if you didn’t get results that show up your blogs, then you should follow these steps.
Let’s get started.

✅ 1. Begin with your Settings:

On your Blogspot dashboard, find Settings. There you will find multiple options like basic, Posts, comments and sharing, Email, Language and formatting, Search preferences, Other and user settings. We will be using these settings first to optimize our Blogspot blog for SEO.
Let us begin one by one with all settings.

a. Basic settings:

The first place where you need to make changes in your title area. Keep your title short (less than 60 characters). Your title should reflect your blog’s address. Here, our blog address is ‘’ and the title is ‘Learn To Travel’ which gives a similar sense.
The second setting is the Description. This description appears when someone types in your blog address on search engines. The one that appears just below the URL in the description. People visit your blog because your description is appealing. So, write it smartly below 500 characters.
The third-place you need to make a change is Privacy settings. Here, you need to check ‘Yes’ on both the options. If you select ‘No’, then search engines like Google discard your blog while showing the results to visitors.
The fourth one is the Publishing setting and in this section, you can change your blog address. However, it is not advised to change the address ever. Only if your address is not suitable to the category of your blog, then you need to change it.
The next one is in HTTPS settings. This is a necessary setting for all websites’ SEO including Blogspot blogs. Most of the service providers charge thousands of rupees for purchasing an SSL certificate, but you are getting that feature for free on Blogspot. HTTPS-enabled sites are those sites which have SSL certificate installed in their server.
HTTPS-enabled sites are marked as safe to browse and Google prioritizes those sites which have HTTPS enabled. That means you need to check “Yes” in these settings. Now, when anyone browses your blog address, they will find 🔒https://, which means it is safe to browse.
Save all the settings after you have modified all sections of basic settings.

b. Posts, Comments, and Sharing:

The sharing option in Google+ was available some time ago, but now they have removed this option. So, here, you need to head straight over to the comment section. When many visitors comment on your blog and you don’t manage those comments, then your site’s spam rate increases which affect your SEO. Likewise, you also need to moderate the comments and allow only positive feedbacks, supportive comments that don’t affect the sentiments of other readers.
Make the comment location ‘Embedded’. Allow the comments from only the users with Google accounts. Anonymous is not preferred for SEO reasons. Set the comment moderation to always and enter the email to receive comment notifications. In the last section, give a comment form message and save settings.

c. Language and Formatting:

There is not much to do in the email setting. Head over to language settings and set your preferred language of blog posts. Format the time zone and date according to your Geolocation.

d. Search preferences: (Important)

This is the main setting option where we need to work on for proper SEO of Blogspot blogs. Carefully follow my instructions and within the next few hours, your free Blogspot blog will start appearing on your search engine results.
1. Give the meta tag description compulsorily. For that, you need to enable the Meta tag description and type in your meta tag description that is below 160 characters and click ‘save changes’. This is the meta description that appears below the URL of your site address in the search engines.
2. Custom page not found: This is the place where you enter your HTML code that shows up whenever someone visiting your blog address does not find the desired page or post. That means, with the help of HTML codes, you will be instructing your readers what to do next for the not found article or content.
You can simply use the following code. Paste it on the Custom page not found section and save settings.

<style type=”text/css”> #error-404 { border: 20px solid #1B1B1B; border-radius: 240px 240px 240px 240px; height: 240px; margin: 0 auto 40px; text-align: center; transition: all 0.8s ease 0s; width: 240px; } #error-404:hover { border-color: #333; } #error-404 span { color: #FA4C29; font-size: 100px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 240px; } .large-heading { font-size: 48px; line-height: 1.2em; } .light-heading { font-weight: 400; } .status-msg-bg { background-color: transparent; } .sidebar-wrapper, .page-header { display: none; } .main-wrapper { margin-right: 0; } .outer-wrapper { min-height: 0; } .status-msg-border { border: 0 none; } </style> <div id=”error-404″> <span>404</span>
</div> <h2 class=”large-heading” style=”text-align: center;”>Page does not exist.</h2>
<h3 class=”light-heading” style=”text-align: center;”>We are Sorry, but the page you were looking for on this blog does not exist.<br>You will be redirected shortly to our homepage. Perhaps, searching might help</h3>
<script type = “text/javascript”>
BSPNF_redirect = setTimeout(function() {
location.pathname= “/”
}, 5000);

See the screenshot below how it looks like.
After a few seconds, your visitors will be redirected to your homepage. You can also get such templates from
3. Custom redirects are used to redirect a URL to another on the same or different blog. If some of your links are broken then you can use this option to redirect those dead or broken links to working links.
4. Google search console is an important SEO setting you need to do. This includes submitting your site to the search console for verification. You will verify that the site is yours and allow search engines to crawl your site. It includes a short process that I have discussed in this article. Please go through it once and come back for other SEO settings.
5. Custom robots.txt is another useful SEO setting for Blogspot. Here, you need to provide custom robots text file so that Google bots can understand which posts or pages to crawl and which not to.
Enable the Custom robots.txt content, click on “Yes” and type in the following code on the text area and click save changes.
Here is the code:
User-agent: Mediapartners-Google
User-agent: *
Disallow: /search
Allow: /

🔼⚠️Be sure that you have changed “Sitemap:” with your own blog address.
6. Custom robots header tags: The most important part of setting up Blogspot SEO for bloggers is Custom robots header tags. This setting allows Google to understand the pages and posts of your Blogspot blog to index in its listings. Follow the screenshot below and save changes.
Well, we have successfully set up the Blogspot SEO for bloggers. Now check again for your site’s visibility in the search box by typing in; Site””

Is it visible? It must be. If it is not yet visible, then you need to wait sometime (usually 24 hours) because it takes time for Google to crawl and index all your site contents.

e. Other Settings:

These settings are used for importing your blog from another address or backup your blog. Backing up is important because you might accidentally lose your content. You can also back up your blog content to migrate to other blogging platforms. You can manage videos from this option. If you no longer want to blog or migrate to another one, then you can delete your blog and all its contents from other settings. Similarly, you can add your Google Analytics property id to see how your visitors interact with your blog from this setting.

Wrapping Up:

Blogspot blogs can be optimized for search engine visibility with simple steps that can be done using the settings. That was all about the general Blogspot blog settings and on-page SEO settings for Blogspot. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to comment below. I am always ready to assist you in setting your blog.
